UK Release Events for Sex Magic: Diagrams of Love, Ithell Colquhoun

I’m heading out to Britain for a number of incredible events supporting the launch of my new book with Tate Publishing, Sex Magic: Diagrams of Love, Ithell Colquhoun. This small but mighty book showcases a number of Colquhoun’s never before seen erotic and esoteric images, accompanied by a number of magical poems. As in all things, Colquhoun pulled no punches! This is spicy stuff!

I have a number of events lined up for London and Cornwall in support of the book. First is the launch on February 5 at the London branch of Arusha Gallery. I’ll be in conversation with sister Colquhoun scholar Emma Sharples of Tate and Cambridge University. This event is sold out! February 9th I will be chatting with my dear friend Christina Harrington about all things magical and Ithell at Treadwell’s Books. Tickets here! February 12, I will be joining my pals Lally MacBeth and Matthew Shaw from Stone Club along with Justin Hopper at The Social for an evening of Sex Magic and stony hijinx. This seems to be sold out too.

Then down to Kernow, where I will be hosted by my dear friends at the Institute of Cornish Studies where I will do a lecture on Colquhoun’s interests in Celtic Spirituality and the shapes it took over the years. This will be online as well as face to face, here is the link! February 15 I’ll be doing an occult writing workshop for the students over at Falmouth University. To top it all off, on February 16 I will be back with my Stone Club pals for a wild party launch at the Admiral Benbow! I’ll be signing books, and will be chatting with Lally and Matthew about Colquhoun, of course. Then, I will return to London and collapse in a heap. Hope to see some of you at one of these events. I expect I will be planning for some US events later in this year.

WOMEN AND THE CHANGING CONTEXT OF ESOTERIC ART for Golden Dome School

This class will explore the changing category of esoteric art from the “Occult revival” of the nineteenth century to the present day, with a focus on the women who have pioneered and innovated within the genre. I will be addressing women’s visual art, performance, and installation in exploring the different historical contexts in which esoteric art has emerged and how it has been received, ranging from early movements such as Symbolism and Surrealism, to the impact of Theosophy and Spiritualism. We will look at artists such as Florence Farr, Hilma af Klint, Georgiana Houghton, Ithell Colquhoun, Betye Saar, and a wave of contemporary artists such as Tai Shani, Saya Woolfalk, and even Bjork who are reconfiguring the boundaries of this exciting and fluctuating category. It’s all virtual and only $25!

Making of Magical Cornwall Lecture

Delighted to be doing a lecture on the Modern history of Magical Cornwall for Viktor Wynd’s Last Tuesday Society on Monday, September 27.

Cornwall has a reputation as a place where magic exists just under the surface. Its history includes a tapestry of Druids, witches and Arthurian legend, set amidst dramatic, sweeping, landscapes and mysterious stone monuments. Today it is a modern Celtic Otherworld that is both genuinely potent and sometimes exploited. This talk will explore the historical development of magical Cornwall in the cultural imagination. We will reach back to its early status as a liminal setting for medieval Continental legend, explore the antiquarian and folklore studies of Cornwall emerging alongside early modern Celtic identities, and finally look at how post-industrial tourism has shaped perceptions of a Cornwall that is lost in time.
